================================================================

Hello and welcome to our regular edition PROMOTE!

I had intended on a special edition this past week, but ended
up in the hospital wed. night, with what I thought was a
heart attack, but turned out to be a bad gall bladder. Spent
2 days in the hospital while they probed and stuck me....grrr.
The problem maker will be coming out in one of the coming weeks
by laser surgery.

Our current backlog of listings is 70+, so if you haven't seen
your ad, its probably because of the backlog. We are at the
1st week of March listings now.

*****  NEW Don't Forget  *****
Check out our new discussion forum for discussing
promotion topics and for posting your site to be visited
for comments and review. This is also an area for PROMOTE!
readers to post comments, ask questions and congregate as
well, so ya'll come on out to the forum and join in. Maybe
you are looking for a specific resource, post it here, could
be one of the other readers or visitors can tell you where to
find it.

This Week's FYI:
NetScape 4.51

Well the big whoopa this week appears to be about Internet
Explorer 5.0. I have seen several articles about making the
switch from Netscape to IE. Why? Because IE 5.0 is supposed to
be faster, and incorporate more business features in it.

Personally, I have been using Netscape for the past 5 years and
will probably continue to do so until it proves to be a less
than adequate browser. I downloaded the new version 4.51 last
night, (15 megs - 128 bit encryption) and installed it. This
version appears to be faster than the last, less crashes so far
(none) than what I was having with the other version as well,
although I think I had some corrupted dll files with my old
version causing the crashes. The standard version is about 10
megs to download.

The mail messenger has several new options which include being
able to view your email with all of the folders on the left and
the normal view of a list of messages at the top that are in
that folder and a view of the contents of the highlighted
message at the bottom. Really enhances the email features. All
of these views are configurable, with or without any specific
window.

They suggest in the readme file to uninstall the old version
first. I had installed the new version over the old version
though, and read the readme file afterwards. Figures...grin.
I had no problems doing it this way, all my bookmarks were
still there, my mail was in place and all of my old
configurations were intact, right down to the mail filters.

In fact I wonder if you uninstall the old version if you would
lose your bookmarks, old mail, and configurations? I suggest
backing up the mail and bookmarks when you do the install
regardless of which way you do it. It also says you have to
reboot before running the new version, but again I just had
to try it, it ran fine directly after the install.

All in all the new version seems to be a big improvement over
the previous versions.

Question: Which browser are you using? Which version? Comments
on the browser war?

Tips:

Windows 95 tends to leave waste files in the
TEMP directory periodically. These files may be unneeded
data files, files that the program has simply "forgotten" about,
or files created and were not deleted because a program
terminated unusually. To free up some more space on your hard
drive, it may be wise to occasionally go to the WINDOWS\TEMP
directory using "Explorer" and delete the files there.

USE Caution! DO NOT delete files that were created today, or
yesterday. How do you tell when they were created? Look out
beside the file name and you should see a date showing when it
was created or last modified.

Files created or modified several weeks ago are probably safe to
delete. That is the purpose of the temp directory, to hold files
of a temporary nature. If you are not sure which files to delete
then do not worry about using this "trick" unless drive space
gets to a minimum. You can also back up the files in another
folder, then delete them in the WINDOWS\TEMP directory, then
if all programs seem to run as they should, you can then delete
the backup temp directory you created and all the uneeded files
at once. Again proceed with caution when deleting files.

--------------------------------------------------

Here is a tip that works with Windows 3.1 or Win 95.

If you need to edit any of these files:
'config.sys', 'autoexec.bat', 'system.ini', 'win.ini',
'msmail.ini', or 'protocol.ini'.

Click on the "Start" button,
choose "Run,"
type in "Sysedit" (no quotes) and press OK.

All of these files will be opened in their own window so you
can jump from one file to the next making needed changes.

--------------------------------------------------

Want to edit the registry?
(same as above)

Click the Start button,
choose Run
type in regedit

You will then have a tree of the available registry sections.
