FYI: Did you know there is legislation for a national database
that would have the names of persons NOT wanting to be called
by telemarketers on the phone?

If it goes through, then a registry will be set up for people to
have their name added to the database. Telemarketers have to pay
$500.00 to join and have access to the database, which they will
want to do, read the below.

If they call anyone in the database and are reported, then they
can be fined $2,000.00.

Interesting huh, lets see if it gets passed or if its shot down
by big time companies and their lobbiest that it would affect
big time.

Browser War Rages On (From Last Weeks FYI)

As you know I took a survey of the two big players and which
ones you use. Interesting results, it started out fairly even
but ended up lopsided. The percentage of you responding was
great, I hope I didn't miss anyone in replying back and
thanking you. If I did, I apologize, and thank you to everyone
for the great response.

Out of 38 votes sent in:

12 responded NetScape
26 responded MS Internet Explorer.

** This is a comment from one of our readers, I though I would
include them in this issue. She explains in detail some of
the differences in the browsers. For those of you with web
sites this should make you more aware of some of the
differences when building your site. I guess I'm bias but I
like her ultimate choice of the elite browser at the end
of her comments. **

Kim wrote>>>
"On your question about browsers, I use both Netscape and MS IE
because I'm a professional webmaster.  All websites must be
tested on both browsers, and also on different versions of them.
Most people don't realize their websites look different, and
don't even work, on both browsers.  I've witnessed new product
failures because the online technology used doesn't work in
Netscape, but works fine in MS IE.  This means all Netscape
users can't use the product demo and certainly won't buy it.

Tables, Javascript and HTML, for starters, are intrepreted
differently by each browser.  Pages without end table tags, for
example, literally disappear in Netscape, but MS IE isn't as
finicky.  In fact, of the browsers, MS IE is the more reliable
in terms of what it will display.  It's the K-mart of browsers.

It'll accept anything, including sloppy HTML coding. Netscape
won't tolerate sloppy code.

This is why pages made in MS Frontpage often don't work in
Netscape. MS Frontpage and Netscape Communicator HTML editors
are both guilty of bugs that effect, and ruin, search engine
submission.  Java, Javascript, MIVA, and other scripts need to
be tested on both browsers.  I've seen MS IE accept Javascript
where Netscape does not, and Javascript is a Netscape "darling".

For the every day surfer, either browser works quite well.  But
what they actually are seeing is anyone's guess.  All pages
display differently, whether Netscape and MS IE or MAC and PC.

If you ever wonder why large websites don't have a lot of gizmos
on them, this is why.

My preference is MS IE, but I don't use it for email.  I believe
Netscapes scores high due to its excellent email functions, its
web design features and cutting edge technology.  As far as I
can see, Netscape is still the more elite of the two."

Tips:

Did you know that if you want to check the contents of a
directory while you are surfing you can use the hyper text
window to do so from within NetScape 4.5x and IE 3.x and up?
Just click on the window and instead of typing http://.....
type c:\[directoryname].... of course replace the directory name
with a real name and no brackets. Example: c:\windows
You will be shown the contents of that directory. Of course
being the programmer and curious type as well, I took it one
step further and decided to try a filename. **Children don't try
this at home. **  I typed c:\autoexec.bak and was presented with
the contents of my autoexec.bak backup batch file. So I then
typed c:\autoexec.bat, big mistake, instead of opening and
viewing the file, it attempted to run the batch file. It locked
up my modem, and other devices, so I had to restart Windows.
Oh well food for thought, just use directories.
I'm not sure about earlier versions of NetScape.

--------------------------------------------------
Autosave What?

Many software programs have a feature to set what
is called autosave on. Is yours on? If not I would
check to see if it is. Usually this can be found
under "Options" or "Configuration". Suppose you
are writing a letter or doing a large spreadsheet
and for whatever the reason, your computer locks
ups. If you haven't saved your work or forgot to,
then all that work is lost. Autosave can be set
to do this automatically from every one minute up
to 30 mintures or more. I suggest setting it to
around every 5 minutes. At least then in the event
of a failure you only lose the last 5 minutes of
work. (Like I did when I monkeyed with the
browser window above). I was also working on this
newsletter. Fortunately my autosave had just saved
my work and I lost nothing whatsoever.

--------------------------------------------------

This is a simple tip but can prove effective. Many times we
get locked into using the same search engine, time after time.
Try using several search engines when doing research or hunting
for something on the net. You may be surprised at the different
items you may find on one and not another. Since many search
engines have different ways of indexing the data, then you can
get a big difference when using various ones with the same
search words.
