Browser War Still Rages On - Rebuttal
** These are not the comments or neccessarily the views of
PROMOTE!, but merely a copy of a rebuttal from a reader of
PROMOTE! Thanks for your input Dave **
Hi Gary,
First of all, thanks for being the first to warn me (and
probably many of us) about the Melissa virus.
As far as what I'm writing about, I have to take a little bit of
exception to what Kim said in the 3/29 issue of Promote!
She mentions that Microsoft products create and accept sloppy
code, which is something I've found to be accurate, and part of
this is intentional on Microsoft's part. They (time after time)
go out of their way to design products that will keep the user
from using another company's products. This is the case with
Front Page. They designed it to make code that's incompatible
with many HTML editors (such as my favorite, Hot Dog Pro).
They did the same thing with Browsers.
Kim mentioned that Netscape doesn't work with all JavaScript,
but this simply isn't true. Netscape created JavaScript and
Microsoft didn't like someone else controlling anything so
they created ActiveX to try to shut JavaScript down. When
that didn't work, Microsoft created Jscript, a blatant
copy of JavaScript that runs JavaScript code. Then they
created proprietary code in Jscript that only works in MSIE,
but not other browsers. Many people get very confused between
JavaScript and Jscript because Jscript is an exact copy of
JavaScript with some other things added. Incidentally,
Microsoft also tried the same thing with the computer language
Java by creating something called Visual J++, which was
identical to Java with some "Microsoft only" additions, but the
courts shut them down. All and I mean ALL Javascript works in
Netscape 4.x, but some people create Jscript code and call it
JavaScript (which is exactly what Microsoft wanted).
As far as product failures, this is usually because Microsoft
themselves have developed something to work only in their
browser or another company has developed something to work
only in Microsoft browsers.
I subscribe to around ten weekly industry mags, and I've kept up
with all of the goings on in the Microsoft trial. They are
famous for doing these types of things to "squash" companies
like Netscape. I put the word "squash" in quotes because that's
exactly the word used in a Microsoft internal memo that turned up
in the court case.
One of the things that came out in recent weeks during the court
case is that Microsoft had signed back room deals with over 90%
of the United States ISP's to place Microsoft's browser in a
better light that Netscape's or to support only MSIE. Over 90%!
The reality is that Microsoft has gone from a nothing in the
browser market to the dominant player for a limited number of
reasons:
1. They force the product on anyone who owns a Microsoft
operating
system, which is nearly everyone.
2. They literally force anyone who uses ANY microsoft product
I've
tried lately to have IE4.0 or higher before you're allowed to try
their other product.
3. They make deals with over 90% of the US's ISP's to make them
the primary browser.
4. They spread misinformation, such as their browser is free
while
Netscape is not. I've been using Netscape since before
Internet
Explorer existed, and I've always downloaded it free, right from
the netscape website. You had to pay if you wanted a CD and a
manual, which I never did.
Just wanted to set the record straight.

Due to time restrictions the tips and software will be back
next week bigger and better, I'm also working on some other
things I hope you might like, but of course I always take

so I'm trying to get the issue out before the power goes off,
like it does here regularly.
Thanks;
