FYI: After the FBI thing with my daughter and now the shootings
in Littleton CO., what is this world coming too?

I want to offer my sympathy to all of the parents and loved ones
of the victims in the shootings.

After all isn't the internet the communication barrier breaker
across the world?

Well I go in for surgery on Wed. the 28th, day after tomorrow
to have my gall bladder removed. Unless there are some
problems though, PROMOTE! should still come out next Monday.

Search engine comments from last week's FYI:

I do not like the keywords being bought and sold as i want to
find sites with good products or good services not necessarily
with large budgets.  I think there is a real niche for a
different type of search engine that looks at the sites and
lists them in order of quality of product.

Alternatively a product like copernic which I use mainly as my
search engine tool which searches all the search engines will
have to rework itself to grab lots of listings from a search
and then reindex them.  The beauty of these type of tools like
webferrett which is another is that you avoid all the
advertising rubbish on the search engine pages.

I feel that if the content of the Search Engine isn't giving
the expected results that the Search Engine site will stop
being used.  It will take about a 50% attrition before it is
realized what is happening and another 25% will disappear
before the situation gets resolved.

I guess that is one of the main reasons I decided to
make IT'S HERE! The easy to use directory.  Out of
frustration I never could find just what I was looking
for in the search engines.  My keywords never brought
up what I wanted.

But the delimma about people having to PAY to get top
position on a web page in my opinion is just another
way to get money.  Face it, there are millions of web
sites on the web and we all can't be first. Of course
society is getting used to greed and in my opinion
bribery.  "I'll pay you x number of dollars if you put
me ahead of my competition"

What about the little guy?  People like me, who enjoy
providing a free service to my visitors.  I enjoy
making my web page, and do make a little change with
affiliate programs, but I'm not making a living
here...
I cannot afford to BUY keywords, or make bids to get
my position at the top of the list.

On the bright side, though many of the search engines
are charging for top position, I know that with IT'S
HERE's unique rotating links, giving everyone a chance
to be in top position, I may just end up with more
visitors :)

Who knows? Maybe I'll get bigger and better than
Yahoo?
Ok, I know I'm  dreaming, but that's how  all big
things start, with a dream...

Remember that all tips are for your use, but we can't be

Tips:

Remember DOS, the command line driven OS?
Here is an easy way to get a printed list of files or
directories to your printer or you can send it to a text file.
Some printers may not work with this method, depending upon
the software setup for that printer. In that case, just send
the listing to a text file and print it out using notepad.

Windows:
Click on <Start>
         <Programs>
         <MS-DOS Prompt>

You will be taken to the DOS command line, (like the old days).

Now just change to the directory you would like a list of files
of. For example the windows directory. (cd - change directory)
This will send a list of all the files in the windows directory
to your printer.

type:  cd \windows       [and press enter]
type:  dir *.* > prn     [and press enter]

Want a list of all the directories on your computer?
Do the below.

type:  cd \              [and press enter]
type:  dir *. > prn      [and press enter]

To send it to a file, just use a file name, DOS will create the
file for you. (dirnames.txt will be created with a list of
all files and directories in your root directory.)

type:  cd \                      [and press enter]
type:  dir *.* > dirnames.txt    [and press enter]

You can then view the text file with notepad or any word
processor.

To exit the command line just click the X in the right hand
corner, or:

type: exit       [and press enter]
